LIGHT PARTY
Why a light party?
light party
Every 31st October at Copmanthorpe Methodist Church
light
                party

Designed with Children and young people of all ages in mind.

Each year on 31st October we hold our Light Party, a joint initiative with St Giles. This has been running now since 2006 with up to 100 children attending each year.

We take over the whole Methodist church building, brightly decorated with lights. Different parties are held for different age groups.

Each party runs for 1½ hours and we have held up to three in an evening. It is a great time of fun, laughter and praise as we choose to celebrate Jesus, Light of the World.

Everyone is invited to come dressed up in friendly costumes; leaders as well as the guests; and we’ve had some great ones.  light

We start the Party with some energetic singing with actions. Favourites include ‘Superhero’ from Hillsongs Jesus is my Superhero DVD and ‘Time for Everything’ from Dave Godfrey’s Dependence Day. Once everyone has arrived and registered we break in to smaller groups to go round different zones spread throughout the building.

light party At this finale we sing our theme song ‘Let your Light Shine’ from Hillsongs Super Strong God DVD. This is awesome both in volume and sight as by this point everyone has their light sticks, and we generally have the odd confetti cannon as well. It’s live modern worship that’s relevant and fun for our kids today.

light party  The idea for the Light Party originated in 2006 from a group of young parents wanting to send a positive message at a time of year when the secular and commercial Halloween appears to make fun of darkness.

For many, our Light Party is now one of the highlights of the year.

We owe particular thanks to the Village Newsagents and to Copmanthorpe Primary School for their support in helping organise our Light Party.

Since 2008, our Light Party has also been supported by North Yorkshire Police as a positive alternative to ‘Trick or Treating’.
