Discipleship or Apprenticeship Courses (Otherwise known as) Bible Study (Basic Information Before Life Ends)Discipleship requires continuing to grow in the faith. We can only do that by studying the Bible. There are bible study groups that meet each week to spend time together reading and discussing God's word as revealed in the bible.Together with St Giles we have started some new study groups. We now have a number of groups. See the weekly notices for more information on these groups. We are also going to be using the Biblefresh initiative within our church family. For more information about Biblefresh, click this Biblefresh link. These established house groups are where we meet to help each other to study and grow in the Christian faith. These house groups welcome new members too. For more information; if you can't contact the named people for each house group (see this week's notices) or would like to consider starting a bible study group in your own home then please contact our minister using the Contact Us page. Sunday WorshipAll are welcome. Details of forthcoming services are shown in the Village Newsletter. Sunday worship may be led by our own minister, by our church family, another minister from the York South circuit or a local preacher from the circuit. There are occasional visiting preachers from other areas. We have an active community of friendship (partnership) within our church with all age groups and styles of worship represented. Each Sunday there is morning worship at 10.30am which is preceded by approximately 10 minutes of worship preparation. We are currently trialling the use of music and images as worship preparation for the morning service. Children and young people are welcome at all services at the Methodist Church. Usually the first 15 minutes of the service is aimed at children and young people (<16) before they go out to Sunday School. All Age Worship services take place at the Methodist Church around once a month. Sometimes these are Shine Together services or our worship service tailored for all ages of our family. These services are at 10.30am and usually last about an hour. The children often have an opportunity to take part in these services. Once a month, often on the first Sunday morning, worship takes the form of a communion service and there is also an evening communion service on one of the Sundays in the month at 6.30pm. Everyone is welcome at these services, and to join us for FairTrade tea and coffee after the morning service. Sunday SchoolWhen there is not All-Age Worship, children join the adults in the first part of the morning Service beginning at 10.30 am and then leave for Sunday School. There are separate groups for younger and older children. Activities include craft, drama, Bible stories and videos and discussions. A chance for children to meet their friends, learn and have fun. Pastoral CareA team of Pastoral Visitors assists the Minister in providing care for the church family. The aim of the team is to reach out to each member of the family in a caring way, getting to know them better, offering friendship and encouragement in the Christian life. They offer prayerful and practical help and support in times of illness and bereavement and ensure that the Minster is aware of changing situations. Many of the team have attended pastoral care and listening courses.Visiting plays a major role and visits made to the housebound and elderly help to keep them in touch with the life of the church. Newcomers are welcomed and invited to join in the various church activities. Two of the pastoral visitors provide care and fellowship to a group of young people. Finance - Our ResponsibilitiesThe Church's finance is administered via the Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer and Gift Aid Secretary. These three, along with a steward, form the Finance Committee. The Church's income comes mostly from the collection taken every service, with a small amount coming from organisations and individuals who use rooms in the Church. Over half of the money received is passed on to the Circuit where it is used to pay the Minister and maintain the manse etc. The Church donates between 10 and 20% of it's disposable income to Charities, both local and national. Expenses incurred by members on behalf of the Church can be reimbursed from the collection at the end of the service by speaking to the Steward on duty or by cheque from either the Treasurer or Assistant Treasurer. Some members choose to make their Collection donation by Envelope or by Standing Order. Either method associates the amount donated with the giver; the advantage of this is that Gift Aid can be claimed on the amount donated. The way the envelope system works is that a supply of small envelopes are provided; the donor places their donation in the envelope and drops it into the collection bag as it is circulated during the service. Each donor's envelopes have the same number written on them; this number is used to identify the donor whilst preserving the donor's anonymity. Bank account details can be obtained from the Treasurer to pay directly into the Church's bank account by Standing Order. Only the Gift Aid Secretary sees amounts paid via the envelope system; for standing orders the Gift Aid Secretary and the Treasurer see the amounts paid. |
